I met a lovely gentleman from Mexico City at one of the Jancis 25th anniversary events in London and here are his recommendations. Hope to try them myself soon!

Star spots.

Maximo (not necessarily tasting menu but they do have the option) for me, its number one right now in the city.

Quintonil, great tasting menu and impressive wine list.

(If you definitely want to do Pujol, do the taco omakase experience which i found cooler than tegular tasting menu).

More Casual.

Rosetta, one star italian-mexican by chef Elena Reygadas.

La Docena, best spot for seafood in Mexico city, mandatory are oysters, stone crab on the grill and aguachiles.

Ultramarinos de Mar, uber cool seafood spot from the chef at EM.

Tacos

Expendio de Maiz, amazing food but with quite a wait/tough ressie.

La Bonvi (best location- Polanco), by far the best tacos of the city in my opinion, mandatory the trompo de picaña.

(as i said avoid the califa de leon tacos that won michelin)

Bars.

Libreria Valladolid, relatively new but quite cool setting, good for a quiet couple drinks.

Hanky Panky, on the 50 best list but def worth checking out.

Manythanks…where to begin?? Something I find odd now is that restaurants makes it look as tho they were totally booked but you wheedle a reservation and find out there are emp[y tables

I don’t know if any of this would apply to Mexico, but here in the US and some other places I’ve been it depends on how you’re making your reservation. What’s available online is limited, and the restaurants always seem to hold back tables to be available to those making direct connections. I’ve tried making reservations online and have been told there’s nothing available on many occasions, but when I ignore that and call the restaurant directly, there’s no problem. I’ve even called the restaurant and gotten an earlier seating time than what I booked online as the “only” available option.

I hadn’t considered this for a restaurant outside the USA, but I will try it.

Go Hawks!!

See Nick’s enthusiastic reviews of Mexico City restaurants here and here. Two articles with the least difficult to get into I would guess being the lovely Contramar. I was dreaming about it last night.

Admittedly some years ago that I visited, but one of the Azul restaurants might do the trick: https://www.azul.rest/en. They specialise in trad Mexican cooking touched with a fine-dining wand. Probably not first-night fayre though as it’s hard-core Mexicana, complex and different flavour combinations (to this Anglo Saxon palate, anyway). Perhaps ease into it on day two?. But certainly of more than historical interest. And if you are looking for somewhere to stay, then I loved https://www.theredtreehouse.com/.

The delights of Red Tree House recommended by Ben above are confirmed by four friends of ours, two Brits and two Americans.

Many thanks to all. I have dreamed about Pujol just from the articles here. I ate at Contramar with friends and had a great time. They had a restaurant here in SF, wish it was still open.
