Just to say how much I enjoyed Walter’s two-parter on Abruzzo’s new-wave producers. All 6 profiles were fascinating!
Jerry, thank you so much for the lovely feedback and I am thrilled you are as fascinated by this new generation of Abruzzo producers as I am!
I would also like to express my thanks. Based on your article, I had a look at what’s available in Switzerland and and found bottles of Valle Reale, Vigneto Sant’Eusanio from the 2011 vintage. You did not review this wine but seem to have like their Vigna del Convento from the same year, so perhaps I’ll give it a try. For less than 20 CHF a bottle, not a big risk I guess
I think you are completely right regarding low risk, but do post your impressions of the 2011, I am curious to know how the wine has developed!
I tried to get Tiberio’s 2021 Trebbiano and 2021 Pecorino but I was told by my usual wine shop that both wines are now unavailable.
The shop owner offered me Tiberio’s 2022 vintages of Trebbiano and Pecorino.
How is the 2022 vintage ? Any feedback will be much appreciated.
I don’t think you can go wrong. I must admit that I had my reservations with regards to Italian whites of this torrid vintage in general, but having tasted quite a few (especially Gavi) it seems that the wines are much fresher than expected, even if they can be a little full-bodied.
When I saw Cristiana Tiberio last year at her estate I tasted several 2022 whites from tank and they all looked really good. Cristiana is extremely focused on linearity and freshness in her wines, and the tank samples confirmed this once again.
I would be keen to read your impressions of Tiberio’s 2022 Trebbiano and Pecorino.
Thank you Walter for your most helpful comments.
I certainly will share my impressions when I have had a chance to drink these 2022 Trebbiano and Pecorino.
I got to visit Cristiana last year as well, and in addition to Walter’s well constructed comments about the quality of her wine, I have to say her farming practises are extremely interesting. She uses high traditional pergola training allowing the movement of air to prevent frost, and the shade of the pergola and the natural ground cover help maintain a cooler micro climate for her vines. A super interesting, thoughtful woman, who makes some super great wines.
Ps: enjoyed the article, @Walter_Speller_Lond1 !
Hi Walter. I’ve opened my second bottle tonight. I am not good at describing wine, but it felt still very youthful with some nice fruit. Not unlike your note on Vigna del Conveto from the same vintage.
Oh, and thank you for today’s article on Villamarina. I didn’t have this wine on the radar but will try to get some bottles as it still represents good value. I just noticed that a lot of 5 bottles from the 1995 vintage went for around 100 CHF at an auction 1 year ago
.
Each time I promise myself to buy less wine, articles on hidden gems pop up on this website ![]()
Sorry about that!
Thanks so much for letting us know Matthieu.
With regards to your comments on trying to buy less wine - every time this happens to me I think of Paola Rosina of the Gavi La Mesma estate, who, on witnessing me buying yet more wine, shook her head, saying: ‘è un malatia’ - it’s an illness.
So we all are excused!
Not sure why this just popped up again on my feed after so long, but…
I have long admitted to people that yes, I do, in fact, have an alcohol problem — but it’s not the drinking part…
I can relate to this!
