Hi Jancis! I love that you had the opportunity to try the 1973! So truly special. I’m curious about the comment Bo Barrett made regarding SO2. Did he happen to mention when that practice was curtailed? I ask because I went to an event this last weekend and one of the guests brought along a 5 L of 1995 Montelena Chardonnay and I’m wondering if the golden color was just normal oxidation or, if it was similar to the comments he made about the 73. My notes to myself on the wine were similar to yours, hence my question.

Sorry for delay in replying. My impression is that they just gradually reduced the SO2 over time. Just back from spending time in Dublin with the Barretts and their wines, including some relatively old Chardonnays (though not the 1995) and they seem uniformly youthful!
