Well a bit of a low note on Rioja. I opened a magnum of Lopez Heredia’s Tondonia 2001 (bought on release) this weekend to accompany the paschal lamb with high expectations. Dead as the proverbial dodo. Second of four. The first was opened too early. Now this one seems to have been breached too late. Do any subscribers have similar/different experiences of this wine in this vintage?

What a shame. That is so, so disappointing. We don’t seem to have a note on the 2001 in our database but I see that the suggested drinking window for 2002 and 2003 are both in the past but I think the 2001 should have slightly better ageing capacity than those two, especially from magnum. Fingers crossed that there will be bottle (cork-performance) variation in a positive way for your last two bottles.

Thank you Julia. Will let you know when I open another.

Thank you Julia what an experience, I’m not at all jealous! Rioja really is exciting at the moment. Is Peter Dutch born or actually Belgian?

David, you are absolutely right. Thank you. My mistake is now corrected.

Not perhaps to oak or not to oak but still a touchy subject in that part of the world.
